all that arctic air here is feeling less like a cold snap and more like a cold slap. icy invasion. at least 23 states, from california to michigan, being assaulted by one of the coldest air masses in decades. temperatures in some areas expected to drop 30 to 50 degrees in as little as 12 hours. >> i can feel the truck kind of sliding. >> reporter: treacherous roads in the twin cities, attacking drivers. highways littered with icy spinouts. >> oh. we're going to hit. we're going to hit. oh. >> reporter: teams of snowplows marching out in full force. and so many vehicles there, struggling to break free of nearly half a foot of snow. here in colorado, sub zero windchills. and in parts, up to a foot of snow. on the frigid streets of denver, the salvation army is helping homeless people find shelter. >> when you get cold snaps like this, it's very dangerous. >> reporter: and 25-mile-per-hour winds kicking

up icy waves along lake superior. making it look more like an ocean than a lake. and, ginger, in honor of your first day, we decided why not show off some of our favorite tv cold weather demonstrations. so, here you go. in about ten minutes outside, we made ice cubes. and of course, we have the hammer made from a frozen banana. and my personal favorite, the frozen t-shirt. the bottom line is, for millions of people are going to be seeing wicked cold temperatures in the next few days. ginger? >> clayton, thank you. of course i love that stuff. in about eight months, denver, you'll be doing the fried egg on a sidewalk. let's talk about what happens before then. it's the ice we're concerned about. and it starts tonight through early tomorrow. it's more than a half-inch in little rock. this gets on trees. it gets on power lines and you have major problems. you could see up to an inch adding up into parts of western kentucky. this could put out power. we're going to be talking about this storm through the week.

beginning of the weekend, really. on top of it, it's minimal snow. but it's snow. we're not into real winter yet. but it feels like it. i have more coming up. today, we're going to be 60 in new york. >> we're just showing off. >> thank you, ginger. we get the latest on that truck packed with dangerous nuclear material, stolen in mexico. it was found abandoned with some of the radioactive material missing. no sign, yet, of the gunmen who stole it. abc's chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has been tracking the story from the start. he joins us now. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, george. it's been an incredible 24 hours with that lethal material stolen. and now, apparently recovered. the thieves are still on the run. but they are now in grave danger. mexican authorities discovered the stolen truck and the highly radioactive material, cobalt 60, abandoned in the countryside, not far from mexico city. it culminated in the huge search and manhunt that spanned six states and mexico, and has some officials worried about the prospects of the stolen radioactive material being used

to make a so-called dirty bomb. >> it's a lot of radioactivity. you could get a lethal dose in just a few minutes from being exposed to this source. >> reporter: authorities say the container carrying the cobalt was found less than a mile from the truck. the thieves opened the container and left the lethal material on the ground, apparently all of it recovered. police are actively checking mexican hospitals for evidence of anyone suffering from radiation exposure. the device was stolen on its way from tijuana en route to a radioactive waste storage facility not far from mexico city. monday, two armed men confronted the truck driver at this remote gas station. the gunmen took off with the truck and its cargo. authorities don't know who they are or if they even knew the radioactive material was onboard. mexican officials suspect the theft was a carjacking and that the thiefs were more interested in stealing the truck than the device. >> it's still an extremely dangerous situation.

the area where the material was found is surrounded. and the recovery and cleanup may take days to complete. george? >> pierre, thanks very much. let's get today's other top stories from josh. we're going to begin with breaking if yous here. an american teaching in an international school in benghazi, libya. was shot and killed while he was out jogging. the associated press said the teacher was from texas and taut chemistry. today's attack not far from last week's attack. there's no claim for the responsibility of the shooting. we'll have updates as news becomes available. and a massive cyberattack, targeting websites we just every day. hackers have stolen the user names and passwords for nearly 2 million accounts in total at facebook, google, twitter, yahoo! and linkedin. perhaps you've heard of a few of them. the hackers installed a virus on computers around the world to capture log-in information and route that information to servers they had set up. also targeted, the payroll service company adp. meaning some workers' paychecks

may have been exposed as well. so, what can you do? you can update your anti-virus software. and change your password. the most common password of hacked accounts is 123456. can't imagine why. thousands of workers at fast food chains such as mcdonald's and burger king are walking off the job today, demanding pay raises. but the question this morning, how much would an increase in their pay end up costing you, the consumer. abc's rebecca jarvis here in new york, with some insight there. good morning to you, rebecca. >> reporter: hi, josh. good morning to you. a typical fast food worker in america makes about $9 an hour. but even those who support their efforts to increase their wages say that that would increase, if they were to increase those wages, that would increase the price of fast food by 20% if these workers were to get what they want. protests across the country this morning. scenes like this in new york, expected in 100 cities, including chicago, denver, houston and l.a., with fast food restaurant employees walking out

of work and on to picket lines. >> until we lift workers up and give them wages they can live off of, there won't be a true recovery from the greatest recession since the depression. >> reporter: protesters say a typical cashier or cook makes less than $19,000 a year. about $1,000 below the poverty line for a family of three. they want the minimum wage more than doubled. from $7.25 an hour to $15. now, the president is joining the conversation. >> we know that there are airport workers and fast food workers and nurse assistants and retail salespeople who work their tails off. and are living at or barely above poverty. >> reporter: the national association of restaurants are fighting back. saying dramatic increases in starting wage will increase prices for restaurant meals and lead to fewer jobs created. and one of the reasons you're seeing scenes like this all

across the country is that restaurants have been one of the few places to show the biggest signs of job growth since the great recession. so, more and more american families, josh, are having to rely on those jobs to get by. >> rebecca jarvis in new york. thank you for that. meanwhile a desperate rescue effort resume this morning to save dozens of whales stranded in the florida everglades after swimming to shallow water. you see some of them there. two beached whales there. wildlife workers have not been able to coax the surviving whales back to open water. we'll have updates throughout the morning here. and finally, this could be victoria's real secret. if you'll forgive me. a former employee at the lingerie chain said that workers there are trained to treat men and women differently. tell only women about special sales promotions. the thinking is, and stay with me, it's rather scientific. men who are always awkward in

that store will pay anything just to get what they came for and get out of that store as quickly as possible. while the stores will not comment, i can offer a focus group of one when i say, yep. yep. >> scientific. >> scientific. science, robin. >> that's it. thank you, josh. now, to the latest on the sexual assault allegations against jameis winston, the florida state football star, who is a heisman trophy candidate. prosecutors say they will announce today whether they will bring charges. abc's matt gutman is here and has the latest. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this announcement could change the lives of both jameis winston and his still anonymous young accuser. if he is charged, winston's college football career could be over. if he's exonerated, it could end with a heisman and a national championship. it's not a pass on the gridiron but a press conference that could determine jameis winston's fate later today. the state attorney on the case will announce whether or not the florida state seminoles heisman

hopeful will face charges of sexual assault from a fellow student, just a day after winston was named conference player of the year. that state attorney telling reporters wednesday, we think we've exhausted all investigative tools. on tuesday, he said his investigation was not based on a football schedule or anyone else's calendar. a reference not only to the seminoles' shot of a national title but the 19-year-old quarterback's campaign for the heisman trophy, which goes to the best college football player, nine days from now. >> i pressured him to hurry the investigation. i know the media has the questions. and i know he has a desire to get this off his plate. >> reporter: that decision on charges coming as winston's florida state seminoles secured the top rank in college football for the first time in 13 years this week. >> if jameis winston were to be charged with a felony, he would not be eligible to play. >> reporter: according to the police report, the accuser was raped in december of 2012. it took her a month to identify winston. but when she did, her attorney

says detectives warned that tallahassee was a big football town. and that the alleged victim needed to think long and hard about a complaint because her life would be made miserable. winston's attorney acknowledging the two had sex but insist it was consensual. >> he would like to put closure to this. so he can move forward. >> reporter: most legal analysts we've spoken to agree that if winston were to face charges, there wouldn't be a press conference. the state attorney would likely have arrested him by now. and despite allegations, jameis winston is still the favorite to win the heisman. >> okay, matt. thank you. going to bring in abc's dan abrams right now. a lot has been made of the timing. prosecutors have maintained that has nothing to do with their actions. >> they just got this case a few weeks ago. this has been a long-time investigation. but from their perspective, just the prosecutors, they've only been formally investigating this for a number of weeks. they're saying, look. back off, to some degree. all of you suggesting that this

is somehow related to the heisman or to the championship game, et cetera. this is, in their view, a very typical investigation in a high-profile case with difficult facts, where they need to take a little bit of time. but they've now come forward. and i give them that credit to that degree. i don't believe that the timing here is somehow connected to the championship game or the heisman voting, et cetera. >> the length of the investigation that you're talking about and we heard in matt's piece, that the alleged assault took place december of last year. january, she identified winston. february, it was ruled an inactive case but not closed. is that unusual? and does what -- is it the victim or winston -- how are they affected by the length of this? >> it is unusual. but remember, let's distinguish the police department from the d.a.'s office, the attorney general's office. you can criticize the police department and say they should have done things that they didn't do. they shouldn't have done things that they did do, et cetera. now, it's in the hands of the

prosecutors, which is almost a separate investigation. >> have we been given any indication what might happen today? >> most people watching this think there won't be charges. but we'll see. >> thanks, guys. we'll turn to the frantic search under way in central idaho for the missing plane carrying a silicon valley executive and his family. the plane took off sunday night from oregon but never made it to its destination in montana. authorities detected a faint signal from the plane's emergency beacon. and today, the search enters its fourth day. abc's neal karlinsky has the story. >> reporter: new video by search and rescue teams show how cold and rugged it is where dale smith's plane vanished sunday. >> i'm dale, and this is my family. wrt smith, seen here in this home video, was by all accounts an exceptionally experienced pilot. this morning, his family, including a daughter, who has been fighting cancer, is just clinging to hope. >> our hearts are breaking.

which has no traffic on it. >> it should be here on time. >> okay, guys. thanks. we're going to begin with the latest on nigella lawson, back on the stand today at the fraud trial of her former assistants. after hours of questioning, where it seemed like she's the one on trial. lama hasan is right outside the court in london with the story. >> reporter: appearing confident and fiery in the courtroom, it was the celebrity chef's chance to hit back. this morning, she told the court that she's, quote, not proud of taking drugs. but that i would rather be honest than ashamed. not bullied with lies. on wednesday, lawson made some explosive admissions. saying she had used cocaine a total of seven times. and, quote, smoked the odd joint. nigella lawson is insisting she does not have a drug problem. explaining to the jury, quote, the idea that i'm a drug addict or habitual user of cocaine is absolutely ridiculous. adding, i didn't have a drug problem. i had a life problem. slamming her former husband,

multimillionaire media mogul, charles saatchi, who she refers to as mr. saatchi. nigella told the court the last time she used cocaine was just over three years ago. i felt, how can i put this, subjected to intimate terrorism by mr. saatchi. i felt totally isolated, in fear, and just unhappy. >> my coffee ice cream is really simple. >> reporter: the 53-year-old tv cook and author is giving evidence in the trial of her two former assistants. elisabetta and francesca grill who have pleaded not guilty of defrauding her and her ex-husband of a million dollars. but it's her rocky relationship with saatchi that is front and center. she testified to confiding in one of the sisters that saatchi would shout and swear at her at home. today, she also testified about these shocking images, taken this summer. insisting, quote, mr. saatchi was not examining me for cocaine.

she said, that was a story he made up when she wouldn't clear his name. while nigella lawson is once again, defiantly denying those claims made by her former husband, charles saatchi today, saying, it is not true that he was getting cocaine out of my nose and i was completely off my head for ten years. and nigella is due to finish giving evidence later today. >> lama, thanks. dan abrams back for more on this. you were talking about this yesterday. you said this trial could hinge on whether or not the jury believes the allegations of drug use. and she was forced to admit something. >> the issue isn't drug use, it's drug abuse. she could have used drugs. and that doesn't change the fact of this particular case. the issue is, was she abusing drugs so badly to the fact that she wouldn't have remembered giving permission or that things were so out of control. let's keep the focus here. this is a fraud trial. this is about whether they're misusing credit cards. you can't buy illegal drugs with credit cards.

so, you've got to ask yourself how directly relevant is this going to be to the charges at hand. >> she walked that line pretty well. >> yeah. i think she had to make some level of admission on that. the question is, how much weight are the jurors going to give this? this is the problem if you're in a position like hers in cooperating with authorities in a prosecution like this. you have to say to yourself, is it worth it? but remember, these are personal assistants. so, everything becomes personal. so, everything in her life, they were helping run everything. so, it all becomes relevant to some degree. >> she ends up paying a price. >> impossible position she's in here. >> she sure is, dan. okay. thanks very much. to the tangled relationship between three houston doctors that ended in criminal charges for a prominent radiologist. a doctor stands accused of threatening a fellow radiologists and breaking into her home. ryan owens has that story for us. >> reporter: she was featured on tlc's "untold stories of the

e.r." at 42, angela siler-fisher is the award-winning director of emergency medicine at one of houston's biggest hospitals. but police say earlier this week, the doc who is also a mother of two, lost her cool. investigators say dr. fisher started harassing dr. marcelle mallery, who used to work with fisher's husband, brandon, at this radiology clinic. according to this charging document, dr. fisher called dr. mallery twice, threatening to hurt her. investigators say she then sent her 25 text messages, including a picture of the inside of mallery's bedroom. >> rage overtakes emotion. and when that happens, it doesn't matter how high your i.q. is. that overtakes everything. >> reporter: investigators say mallery home surveillance camera showed dr. fisher illegally entering the house by kicking in the doggy door. she then allegedly wrote home

mentally, it's another challenge because that was phase one, as anyone who has gone through this battle, as robin has, knows that's the first step. but the next couple ones are going to be tougher. and mentally, i think, is the toughest part of it because, robin, you gave me some great advice. you have to go hour-by-hour on this one. day-by-day. and it forces you to live in the moment. i think that's a good lesson for everyone. if you look at the positive out of this, there are days if you let your mind wander, it's fairly devastating. but you keep your head together. you come into work. you hug your friends. and you're thankful to be where you are with your family and the people who matter. >> and the next step for you? >> the next step is chemotherapy. and that begins december 16th. i mentioned in the article that it had -- i made the choice to have the double mastectomy. and for me, it felt like the right choice. and it turned out to be the right choice. not only did they find another malignant tumor, they also saw problems in my left breast, as

well, that looked like it was going to be problematic later on, as well. it also spread to my lymph node. and that was the devastating news for me. when i woke up, the first question i asked was, did it spread to my lymph nodes? that's the difference between chemo and no chemo. >> yes, it is. >> so, chemo begins for me in a little bit under two weeks. >> but you're working through it? >> i'm going to work through it. i saw robin do it. i know how strong you were. and you give me strength, robin, because it is important to get up and have something to do each day, even if you don't feel great. and even if you feel crappy. and they have all these new drugs to make it less difficult. i have four months of chemo. some people have it harder than i do. so, i will take it hour-by-hour. >> you are so strong. >> and seeing -- it was so great to see you. i know you came to see sam off yesterday. and to spend some time with you yesterday was terrific. and you did mention something. you mentioned the article, as well. you're really happy you had this mammogram when you did. you maybe wish you had it sooner. and i want to say today,

speaking to the good folks in detroit, wxyz, pvi in philadelphia. they said so many viewers after your diagnosis and public sharing of the struggle, so many viewers said they went out and got their mammograms, as well. >> that is a powerful message. we talked about this. i had had that prescription for a full year. and i didn't go. and cancer spreads. and the sooner you get it, the better your prognosis. and with the fda regulations being that women can wait until they're 50, it was my excuse to say, eh, i can wait a couple years. some doctors say 40. some people say 50. maybe i'll split the difference. that could have meant, probably would have meant the difference between life and death for me. so, 40 for me was the right time. but 39 probably would have been better. >> and how happy we are to have you back. and your family, beautiful pictures in "people" magazine. >> thank you. >> they spent time with you over thanksgiving. and i know you're fighting for yourself. but you're fighting for them, as well.

first things first. you're working with prosthetic teeth right there? how was it? >> giant fake teeth. it was interesting. i had to learn how to retalk because i had a horrible lisp when i put them on. they would give me a month early. i would make phone calls all the time with the teeth in so i could deal with my lisp and do a strange accent. i would make phone calls. and call best buy and stuff like that. >> the preparation, you have the teeth. but you're also digging into the story. a story that maybe people feel like they know. but when you actually read about this one, the level of this fraud, what did you make of it all when you first came upon it? >> well, you know, there's been movies about wall street before and things like that. but i felt really strongly that i -- this character that i'm playing is perhaps someone i really respect very much or

respect their morality very much. and so, i just thought it was really important to show realistically what it's hike for someone who has no moral compass, has no impulse control. and the only thing they really care about is being wealthy and all of the hedonistic things that come along with that and how you lose yourself along the way. >> and this is the first time for you with martin scorsese. i can only imagine, the casting process. first day on the set. what was it like? >> just all terrifying. no, martin socorsesscorsese, mye director of all-time. when i was told i would get the opportunity to meet with him about this movie, that alone, if that had just ended there, it would have been the highlight of my life. i was terrified. and the first month of rehearsals with just myself and martin scorsese and leonardo

dicaprio. for the first few days, i was like, what am i doing here? what is going on? >> we have pictures of "the hollywood reporter" with all of you. you mentioned leo. the two of them had worked together a lot. >> yeah. this is their fifth film together. >> does that change the way it went on set? did that pay off for you guys in the end? >> well, basically, i had to go in there and really show them what the new game plan was. just kidding. i was terrified the whole time. >> got a nice clip. >> i was terrified the entire time. and these guys, my favorite actor and martin socore sescy, y favorite director. i shouldn't be in the same room as those guys. i tried to learn as much as possible. it was great to see how close they collaborate after four -- this was their fifth film together. i had never seen a bond like that between an actor and director. i respect them -- everyone

respects them so much. and they respect each other so much. it was an amazing thing to watch and be a part of. >> an amazing film. robin mentioned it earlier. the trailer alone, and maybe people are seeing it for the first time. trailer of the year, no question. movie pays off in spades. jonah hill, go see this movie. it's "the wolf of wall street." >> i'm sorry i rupted your thing there. >> awesome. coming up here, apparently there's a teenage girl crushing the competition on the monster truck circuit. oh, yes, she is. we'll meet her, next.
